I figured you were considering people like Zinn — his work and perspective are fantastic (we read him in high school over a decade ago). It’s about time for a new edition from the people’s perspective to capture America from the past 20 or so years, particularly as it relates to racial justice and equality.
I understand your overarching thesis, and as a white man I can empathize, but many of us — particularly of the millennial generation — do not identify with the “whiteness” privilege of the past. Nor do we relate to Trumpism and Roger Stone’s conception of America. Your piece has a tendency to lump all of us together and paint with an unreasonably broad brush, demonizing well-intentioned and open-minded white people in the process.
Everyone should understand the “real” history. Nobody should be blamed for the sins of others who look like them or those who came before them.
