Israel needs to respect their sovereignty and negotiate for a two-state solution. Many past negotiations were attempted and failed because Palestinian hardliners refused to even concede that Israel has ancestral rights to this homeland too.

I fear, however, that the right-wing extremists in Netanyahu's coalition will be unwilling to compromise with Palestine should Hamas be defeated. Israeli politics are probably in their worst state ever, and it couldn't have come at a worse time.
