If we continue to make these arguments (many of which I agree with), we will lose more national elections to MAGA. The reality is that "cancel culture" has done liberals a huge disservice. Instead of promoting the very tenets of liberalism that encourage open and spirited debate, we censor opinions we don't agree with or find troubling instead of using rhetoric to expose their errors - there's a direct connection between this mentality and the rise and staying power of MAGA.
Many in and around MAGA feel shut down, ignored, and patronized. So what do they do? They don't embrace liberal ideas or principles, they run from them.
This isn't about the moral or political equivalence of cancel culture v. January 6th. It's about the effect cancel culture, censorship, and elitism has had on American democracy. It has only created more division, not champions of democracy and liberal worldviews.
