Good piece, George. My fear with the rise of independent voices and citizen journalists is the lack of editors. Even the best and most thoughtful individual voices make mistakes or let their biases run wild. I think we're often too quick to celebrate these individuals before highlighting those risks.
I'm not sure there's an easy solution. We should encourage more people to give their perspectives and report on what's happening in their communities (which is part of the mission of this publication!), but at the same time ensure we're being accurate with as little bias as possible.
So while I agree that mainstream media is dying, fact-checking and truth may go with it if we cannot insert editors or train the masses on critical thinking skills so everyone is equipped at becoming their own editor (I previously wrote an essay on this, but fear it's only good theory, not practice).
